Kybella: “Surgery in a Syringe”

Kybella has made a name for itself over the past few years as a more defined jawline has become ‘all the rage’ in cosmetics.  Khloe Kardashian was the company’s spokesperson for a while, and who doesn’t want to hear what she has done to herself over the years?  So what is it?  Kybella is the only FDA approved injectable treatment (aka nonsurgical procedure) that destroys fat cells under the chin.  The chemical name is deoxycholic acid, which is actually a bile acid that is naturally found in our body.  It breaks down and absorbs fats in our diet.  Cosmetically, we are injecting it to break down stubborn unwanted fat that just doesn’t seem to want to go away with diet and exercise.  As a physician assistant in the plastic surgery world, it is another tool I have in my tool belt for my patients who are not ready or willing to move forward with surgery.

Have an inch to pinch?

Although Kybella is FDA approved for submental chin fat, it is also being safely utilized in other areas of the body.  Bra fat, jowls, even small amounts of stubborn fat in the abdomen and thighs are being dissolved with this medication.  However, the reason we are not swimming in it (and trust me I would if I could) is that it really works best for small pockets of fat rather than larger ones.  A consult is imperative prior to Kybella treatments so that we can determine if you will be getting good result and the biggest bang for your buck.

What are the side effects of Kybella?

With any type of injectable, bruising is a common side effect as we are placing the medication with a needle.  Because Kybella is permanently dissolving fat, we expect swelling of the treated area.  And the more swelling the better! That means that the medication is working and those fat cells are being destroyed.  Other side effects of kybella that can happen are numbness of the treated area, uneven smile, redness, and hardness of the treated area.  All of these side effects are typically temporary and resolve with time.

Kybella? Coolsculpting? Or Liposuction?

So how as a patient do you know what fat removal procedure is right for you?  Coolsculpting and liposuction are other options for fat removal and have proven great results.  I typically will be very honest with you at your consult in determining what procedure will get you the best results.  If you have more fat present than kybella can resolve, then Coolsculpting or liposuction may be better options.  It will depend on the area of concern and how much fat is present.

So all in all, a great option for contouring the jawline, getting rid of small pockets of stubborn fat, and boosting your confidence!
